There are currently more than 15 different Burnett YDNA lines in the US, some of which reside in the same counties simultaneously. Previous books contain inaccuracies, so they should be referenced with caution. A major error is the association of John or Lucretia Burnett with Scotland, which is contradicted by substantial primary source records.

A full research paper for John and Lucretia Burnett not being connected to the House of Leys in Scotland can be found on the Burnett Primary Sources Tree in Johns Gallery or at Wikitree at this link

Significant advancements have been made in understanding this family's connections through YDNA testing. Their son John Burnett II is a key reference point. However, he had only two sons: John III and Joseph. If your lineage traces back to Jeremiah Burnett I, born 1718, it is important for a male relative with the last name Burnett to take a Y37 DNA test to determine the connection to John and Lucretia Burnett. It has been established that Jeremiah was not the son of John Burnett and Amy Gatewood and did not exist.

A research paper about Jeremiah with primary source documentation is on the Burnett Primary Sources Tree and it can also be found on Wikitree at this link

The sons attributed to Jeremiah bn 1718 are of different YDNA lines and there is NO proof that Jeremiah Sr ever existed contrary to what previously published books have stated.

Establishing a connection to John and Lucretia Burnett can be definitively achieved through YDNA testing, unless documentary evidence is available to trace lineage directly to their son, John Burnett II. YDNA testing now allows for the identification of the specific son from whom a tester descends. Understanding which lineage originates from which son aids in determining migration paths and facilitates the search for primary source documentation to substantiate the connection.

If you reach out to any of the individuals listed below, they can assist you in identifying your specific lineage of Burnetts and advise on the appropriate YDNA testing.
